The Menengai Cream Cheetahs secured their third Rugby Super Series title by defeating the KCB Bank Lions 18-10 in a closely contested final held at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on Saturday 25 May 2024.
With two penalties from top points scorer Quinto Ongo and Levi Amunga’s penalty for the Lions, the Cheetahs took a 6-3 lead at halftime despite being down to 14 men early on due to Emmanuel Mboya’s sin binning. However, the Cheetahs managed well with the temporary deficit and showcased strong forward play led by Samson Onsomu and Beldad Ogeta.
The Lions started the second half strong with a try from Givens Oduor, but the Cheetahs responded quickly with Felix Odhiambo’s try to take the lead. The Cheetahs maintained their dominance throughout the rest of the game, eventually sealing the victory with Ibrahim Ayoo’s late try.
In addition, Quinto Ongo finished as the top points scorer, while Griffin Chao, Victor Odhiambo, and Givens Oduor were joint top try scorers. The Kabras Sugar Buffaloes claimed third place overall, with Faiba Mobile Rhinos finishing at the bottom of the table.
The Cheetahs’ victory in 2024 adds to their previous titles in 2004 and 2006, continuing their strong legacy in the Rugby Super Series.
