As a confident and ambitious 25-year-old aspiring to officiate top college basketball games, Scott Foster received some advice from his dad in 1992. He had the choice between officiating for the Continental Basketball Association, a training ground for the NBA, for $95 per game, or continue his path of officiating Division I games paying $250 per game. Throughout his childhood, Foster’s dad was a hero to many for his role as an assistant fire chief, as well as his leadership qualities. Despite the pressure from others to reconsider the CBA job offer, Foster had a dream and a vision, comparing himself to the great basketball player, Michael Jordan. Today, Foster has established himself as one of the top NBA referees, with an impressive resume including the most playoff games, NBA Finals games, and consecutive finals officiated.
While Foster enjoys success in his officiating career, not everyone shares the same positive views. Some NBA coaches and players criticize him for his arrogance, unwillingness to communicate, and tendency to escalate conflicts. Foster’s connection to Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee involved in a betting scandal, has also raised suspicion and mistrust. Despite his polarizing reputation, Foster remains focused on his job and strives for accuracy and fairness in his officiating.
Although Foster faces criticism and challenges, he remains dedicated to his craft, drawing inspiration from his early days as a referee and his father’s teachings about living in the moment.
