Spotify’s EQUAL program is dedicated to supporting female artists by providing them with a global platform through playlists, content hubs, and partnerships. Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr, known for her popular songs such as “Rush,” “Sability,” and “Rhythm & Blues,” is set to take the spotlight for Spotify’s EQUAL Africa and EQUAL Global initiatives this May. She will be joining Tiwa Savage as the only other African artist to be featured in both programs.
Monica Kemoli-Savanne, Spotify’s Senior Artist & Label Partnerships Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, expresses the company’s commitment to empowering women in the music industry and creating a more equitable environment. The success of artists like Ayra Starr showcases the immense talent present in Africa and the importance of providing a platform for their global recognition. Spotify hosted 15 EQUAL activations in 2023, resulting in over 14.8 million artist discoveries and 11,800 editorial playlist adds for EQUAL artists.
Ayra Starr, whose track “Commas” has already amassed over 35 million streams on Spotify since its release in February, shares her unique musical style that has helped her carve a niche in the industry. She expresses her gratitude for being chosen as a Spotify EQUAL Ambassador and the opportunity to represent women in Afrobeats and African music.

How do you view the significance of the Spotify EQUAL program?
Spotify EQUAL plays a crucial role in highlighting the hard work of women in music across various roles and positions within the industry.
What does being selected as Spotify’s EQUAL artist mean to you, both on a local and global scale?
It holds immense importance for me as a woman in music to support and empower my gender and strive for equality in the industry.
How would you describe your music style to someone unfamiliar with your work?
My music is characterized by its vibrancy, uniqueness, and beauty, offering a distinct and eccentric sound.
Can we expect new music from you soon?
Absolutely! I have a new single titled “Bad Vibes” with Seyi Vibes that I’m excited for everyone to hear. It’s a genre-blending track that is sure to uplift and bring joy to listeners.
