Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, has met with various groups fighting against the military junta in Myanmar to help mediate the ongoing conflict that has been happening since the 2021 coup.
Reports from Myanmar’s Salween News on May 6 stated that Thaksin had meetings with representatives from the National Unity Government (NUG) and other organizations such as the Karen National Union, Restoration Council of Shan State, Karenni National Progressive Party, and Kachin National Organization.
These informal meetings took place during Thaksin’s visits to Chiang Mai in March and April, where he expressed his desire to mediate between the junta and the opposing groups. Thaksin, who recently returned to Thailand from exile, has been actively involved in the Pheu Thai government led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
Thaksin has also requested permission to visit Myanmar to facilitate dialogue, but there has been no official response from the military council in Naypyidaw yet.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry recently saw resignations from key personnel, including Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara and Deputy Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeo, amid the ongoing conflict in Myanmar.
Thailand’s new Foreign Minister Sangiampongsa confirmed Thaksin’s meetings, emphasizing that they were personal and not part of the Thai government’s official policy towards Myanmar.
The Myanmar armed forces view Thaksin as a potential mediator based on his previous efforts to improve relations between Thailand and Myanmar during his time in power. Thaksin’s business-oriented approach prioritized good relations with the junta over human rights and democracy.
Despite uncertainty about Thaksin’s current approach, his influence and connections make him a valuable intermediary for unofficial talks between Thailand and parties involved in Myanmar’s conflict.
Despite the slim chances of a negotiated settlement in Myanmar, maintaining open channels of communication remains crucial until both sides are willing to engage in talks.
