When discussing sustainability and climate change, our minds often go to large-scale initiatives from governments and big organizations. But what about the role of small businesses in contributing to the bigger picture?
As the owner of two small product-based e-commerce brands, I am constantly thinking about how to make my business practices more sustainable while also remaining cost-effective.
While sustainability can be costly and impact our bottom lines, I believe that even small businesses can take steps towards being more environmentally friendly. It’s all about taking baby steps.
Changing Design and Mindset
When it comes to sustainability, most consumers are familiar with the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle. However, putting these practices into action can be a challenge. That’s why the products from my brands, Playand and A Mighty Mum, are designed to be multi-functional, promoting reuse and reducing the need for multiple purchases.
By designing products with sustainability in mind, I believe we can influence consumer behavior and encourage more conscious purchasing habits.
Packaging and Protection
For small business owners, the costs of sustainability can be daunting. As a product-based business, packaging plays a crucial role. For A Mighty Mum, we have taken steps to minimize our environmental impact by using biodegradable or paper packaging, while also exploring ways to reduce printed material.
Similarly, for Playand, we have eliminated printed materials in packaging and are moving away from unnecessary branded materials that do not enhance the brand image.
A Mighty Haven Social Initiative
Recently, we launched a social initiative called A Mighty Haven, where we collect preloved clothing and toys to redistribute to mummies and children in need. By encouraging reuse and giving back to the community, we are able to make a positive impact while reducing waste.
By focusing on clothing items, we aim to address the challenges of textile recycling and promote sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
Starting Small for Big Impact
Sustainability is a gradual process, but every small change can make a difference. If all small businesses take steps towards sustainability, the collective impact can be significant.
While we may not have grand ambitions, we are committed to making a difference in our own way, one step at a time.
