Mark Clattenburg released his autobiography, Whistle Blower, two and a half years ago. The book caused a stir with its candid content and aggressive promotional efforts.
In the book, Clattenburg didn’t hold back in his criticism of former colleagues like Graham Poll, Martin Atkinson, and David Elleray. He even described his old boss at PGMOL, Mike Riley, as “a boring f**ker.”
Despite a slightly kinder tone towards Howard Webb, with whom he had a strained relationship, Clattenburg made it clear that they were unlikely to reconcile.
However, in 2021, Clattenburg found himself in need of Webb’s assistance when he returned to the Premier League as Nottingham Forest’s refereeing analyst. This role required him to work closely with Webb, who had recently taken over as head of PGMOL.
This new working relationship has already faced challenges, particularly after Forest’s contentious 2-0 defeat at Everton. The club raised concerns about the appointment of Stuart Attwell to VAR duties, alleging that he was a Luton fan.
Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.
We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times.
NFFC will now consider its options.
