SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Chris Paul is 11 hours away from the end of his 19th NBA season and less than a month from turning 39. Sitting in the third row at the Golden 1 Center after the Golden State Warriors’ morning shootaround in Sacramento, Paul watches as the Sacramento Kings defeat them 118-94, resulting in their elimination and casting doubt on Paul’s immediate future.
Despite this, Paul is not retiring. He is determined to play a 20th NBA season, somewhere.
“I’ll discuss with my family and support system to see what the next step is,” Paul revealed to The Athletic. “But this is not the end of my career. I’m certain of that.”
Although Paul is under contract for the Warriors next season, all $30 million of his deal is non-guaranteed, giving the team some financial flexibility. The ownership group is inclined to avoid the luxury tax, which means considerations will be made regarding Paul’s future with the team in the upcoming weeks.
The uncertainty looms over Paul’s future in Golden State, with the possibility of a trade or release to free up salary space before June 28.
Paul reflects on his experiences with the Warriors, appreciating the proximity to Los Angeles and the open culture fostered by coach Steve Kerr. He values the communication and inclusivity within the team, which allowed him to spend more time with his family, a rarity in his career.
Embracing the unexpected union with former rivals like Draymond Green and Klay Thompson, Paul fostered meaningful connections off the court, enjoying the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences with his new teammates.
Paul acknowledges the business aspect of the NBA and remains hopeful for his future, cognizant of the balance between personal satisfaction and on-court ambitions. While the season presented challenges, Paul relished the chance to compete and connect with his teammates.
As the season progressed, Paul found his role alongside Stephen Curry and Thompson, adapting to a new position as a backup point guard. Despite challenges, Paul’s impact on and off the court was widely recognized by Kerr and his teammates.
While a potential return to the Warriors remains uncertain, Paul’s professionalism and leadership leave a lasting impression on the team. Kerr expresses admiration for Paul’s character and contributions, hoping for a possible reunion in the future.
