By Michelle Pickens, as told to Danny Bonvissuto
From a young age, I experienced various health issues, including severe constipation, nausea, vomiting, and food sensitivities. These symptoms later evolved into diarrhea, irregular bowel movements, and pain. I also struggled with fatigue and a weak immune system, frequently falling ill.
Mentally, I battled high anxiety, often worried about finding a bathroom or feeling nauseous. Despite my concerns, doctors brushed it off as anxiety, attributing it to growing out of it.
Finally, a Diagnosis
After years of misdiagnosis, I was eventually diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in 2015 at the age of 23. As my symptoms worsened, including increased vomiting, pain, and debilitating fatigue, I sought additional medical care.
Receiving a proper diagnosis was a relief, validating my experiences and giving me hope for improvement.
Sharing My Story
In 2016, I launched a blog named Crohnically Blonde to connect with others facing similar challenges. Through this platform, I’ve built relationships within an online community, offering support and encouragement to those starting their own journey.
Managing My Medication
Initially, I tried several medications with little success. Now, I undergo infusions of an immunosuppressive drug every 7 weeks, requiring careful planning due to its side effects.
While I have the option of additional medications, I strive to manage my symptoms independently to minimize dependence on pharmaceuticals.
Crohn’s, Pregnancy, and Motherhood
Crohn’s impacted my pregnancy, leading to complications and adjustments in my treatment plan. Becoming a mother has reshaped my expectations, emphasizing the importance of self-care to effectively care for my child.
With a strong support system, I navigate the challenges of motherhood while managing my condition.
Schedule and Adjust
Currently, working from home as a tech company recruiter has significantly improved my quality of life. Despite this, Crohn’s continues to impact my daily routine, necessitating flexibility and prioritizing self-care.
Managing sleep and stress is crucial in preventing symptom flare-ups, requiring me to maintain a balanced lifestyle.
Social Life Strategies
Open communication about my condition has fostered understanding among colleagues, friends, and family. I prioritize activities based on my energy levels, practicing self-awareness and self-care.
While I plan social outings, I remain adaptable to changing circumstances and prioritize my well-being.
Food in Flux
Following a gluten-free diet has been beneficial, but food sensitivities remain unpredictable. I maintain a consistent meal schedule and monitor my diet closely to prevent flare-ups.
Remaining flexible and attuned to my body’s needs is essential in managing the unpredictability of Crohn’s disease. Prioritizing self-care and well-being guides my daily decisions.
