During his visit to Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda, Minister Hussen emphasizes Canada’s active involvement in Africa

Minister of International Development, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, recently completed his journey to Benin, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Throughout his visit, he emphasized Canada’s commitment to Africa, with a focus on empowering women and girls, promoting green economic growth, and working towards a more prosperous world for all.

In Benin, Minister Hussen, accompanied by Kouaro Yves Chabi, Minister of Secondary and Technical Education and Vocational Training, visited a vocational center supported by the project “My Training, My Job, My Future” implemented by Canadian partner Éducation Internationale. He engaged with project beneficiaries to better understand the challenges of vocational training and socio-professional integration. Additionally, he visited the Canada-funded Center for the Integrated Care of Victims of Gender-Based Violence and discussed efforts to eliminate gender-based violence, a shared priority for Benin and Canada.

He also met with key officials in Benin, including representatives from various organizations such as the UN, World Bank, and African Development Bank. Minister Hussen discussed bilateral and multilateral trade and development issues, as well as engaged with civil society organizations to address human dignity, equality, and inclusion. Meetings with government ministers further highlighted the challenges and needs in sectors such as social affairs, microfinance, and health in Benin.

In the DRC, Minister Hussen visited projects like “Talents Pluriels” by Cuso International and the “Women’s Voice and Leadership” initiative by The Carter Center, aimed at supporting vulnerable youths and women electoral candidates, respectively. He also visited Community Learning Centers for Women and Girls in the Kongo Central province, where literacy and vocational training are provided. Discussions with key figures in the DRC, including the President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, centered around collaboration opportunities between Canada and the country.

In Rwanda, Minister Hussen participated in the 30th commemoration of the genocide against the Tutsi, honoring the lives lost and recognizing the resilience of survivors. The trip underscored Canada’s commitment to Africa and its dedication to promoting gender equality, economic growth, and humanitarian efforts in the region.
