My New Golf Hobby: Surprising Health Benefits

On April 5, 2024, I resisted invitations to try, learn, and play golf for decades. I considered it frustrating, expensive, and time-consuming. I talked myself out of giving it a shot.

As someone who dabbles in hobbies, I finally decided to give golf a try last summer. I purchased inexpensive clubs, took a few lessons, and played a few rounds every few weeks. Despite logging bad scores, I fell in love-hate with the sport after hitting some satisfying shots.

It felt right.

Unexpectedly, I started improving in other areas of my life without consciously trying. I became consistent in my workouts, increased my daily steps, drank less, and made healthier choices at restaurants.

These changes were subtle but significant, and I couldn’t believe golf had a role in them.

Psychologists refer to this phenomenon as the spillover effect, where one healthy behavior leads to others effortlessly. Starting a regular exercise routine can naturally transition into healthier eating habits, showcasing the power of behavior change.

This effect is influenced by our brain systems that impact competence and confidence.

Advancing in the change process can enhance the spillover effect, especially when individuals take action or maintain those actions.

You can replace “golf” with any new interest like gardening, surfing, yoga, or chess to understand the broader point. Progress in one area can positively impact other aspects of life if you remain committed despite setbacks.

Here are some strategies to assist you in this journey.

Expand Your Definition of Mindfulness

Mindfulness on the golf course allows me to disconnect from my phone and be fully present, but it goes beyond that. Mindfulness involves how and why you pay attention, emphasizing the importance of kindness in the process.

Understanding why you engage in a new activity and practicing kindness towards yourself can foster self-care and resilience amidst setbacks. Mindfulness can help you navigate through challenges effectively and compassionately.

Mistakes become opportunities for learning, emphasizing the importance of believing in both the purpose and the process of change. Confidence plays a crucial role in healthy behavior change, driving intrinsic motivation and positive outcomes.

Focusing on bigger-picture motivations and internal drive can lead to lasting change across various aspects of life.

Embracing unintended consequences can also contribute to positive shifts in health behaviors, highlighting the benefits of engaging in hobbies and leisure activities.

Hobbies activate various pathways that enhance mental health, social connections, and purpose, offering valuable health benefits beyond physical activity.

Engaging in hobbies frequently exposes you to essential ingredients that promote health and well-being, including distraction, creativity, and relaxation. Each hobby provides unique benefits, contributing to overall health and happiness.

Lessons learned through golf, such as attention to detail, patience, seeking help, and savoring the present moment, can translate into success in other areas of life.
