Preventing Gender Bias and Promoting Responsible Use of AI: Strategies for Startups to Empower Women in Tech

Veronika Folkova, Director, People Business Partners in APAC, Confluent

Challenges persist in creating an equal playing field for people of all genders in the startup ecosystem, despite progress being made.

“While increasing gender representation is a positive indicator of progress, it is not the sole solution to promoting gender equality. The key to closing the gender gap lies in developing a supportive environment to retain and nurture talent, while aligning leadership values with the expectations set for all employees,” expressed Veronika Folkova, Director, People Business Partners in APAC, Confluent.

Silicon Valley-based data streaming platform Confluent has introduced initiatives to ensure gender equality. However, as AI technology gains popularity, questions about its impact on gender equality arise.

How will the wider adoption of AI impact gender equality in the workplace, especially in the tech sector? How can startups contribute to the responsible utilization of technology? Folkova addresses these topics in an email interview with e27.

Below is an edited excerpt from the interview.

Can you discuss the presence of gender bias in AI? What potential harms can it cause?

Gender bias within AI is a multifaceted issue. AI analyzes large datasets to identify patterns and make predictions, which can have far-reaching effects on various groups of individuals. Women, particularly in certain regions, may face obstacles in education and training, resulting in unconscious biases. Much of the content and research in AI is from a male perspective, leading to biased algorithms that perpetuate discrimination and exclusion.

What are your suggested solutions?

Addressing gender bias in AI is complex, and it requires creating equal opportunities, conducting thorough research, and enhancing awareness and education to leverage AI effectively.

How can governments proactively address this issue?

In the recent budget, Singapore announced significant investments in AI to bolster talent and industry development. These efforts, combined with increased awareness of AI’s limitations, aim to mitigate biases and foster innovation.

What role can tech startups play in promoting responsible AI use?

Startups, despite their size, can influence industry practices by prioritizing diversity, transparency, and collaboration in AI development.

Do you have initiatives in place to prevent harmful AI use?

Confluent focuses on providing trustworthy data streams for real-time AI applications, enabling customers to detect and address abuse promptly.
