Next leader of Vietnam faces critical moment with economy and demographics – Radio Free Asia

In January, rumors swirled about the location of Nguyen Phu Trong, the Communist Party of Vietnam general secretary. He had not been seen in public for several weeks, raising concerns about his health. Previous rumors had proven true when Trong suffered a stroke in 2019. While he reappeared quickly this time, delivering a speech to the National Assembly on January 15, the speculations about his health serve as a reminder of both his and the country’s vulnerability.

Looking ahead, the next general-secretary, if elected in the CPV National Congress in 2026 and if Trong retires, will govern during a critical decade of Vietnam’s development. This leader will face uncertain global politics, particularly concerning China’s struggling economy and America’s potential retreat from international engagement.

A major concern for Vietnam is its aging population, leading to a potential demographic crisis. The workforce is expected to decline, while the number of retirees will increase, putting pressure on the government to provide pensions and healthcare. Vietnam must boost its economy and productivity to address these challenges, as well as navigate potential impacts from global dynamics such as trade dependencies and environmental issues.

The next party chief will be tasked with making tough decisions to ensure Vietnam’s economic stability and address social and demographic challenges. While there are positive growth forecasts, the incoming leader will need to balance economic development, anti-corruption efforts, administrative reforms, and diplomatic relations in a complex and evolving landscape.

David Hutt, an expert in Southeast Asian politics, provides analysis on the situation in Vietnam, highlighting the critical decisions that lie ahead for the country’s leadership.
