GE Vernova (www.GEVernova.com), a company focused on driving electrification and decarbonization, is committed to speeding up Nigeria’s sustainable energy transition journey. The company’s key operating segments include power (gas, nuclear, hydro, steam), wind (onshore, offshore), and electrification (transmission, distribution, conversion, storage, and orchestration of electricity). With a presence in Nigeria for over 100 years, GE Vernova supports the generation of more than half of Nigeria’s power supply, serving various sectors such as utilities, independent power plants, the oil & gas industry, and the cement sector. Globally, the company contributes to approximately 30% of the world’s electricity generation.
Nigeria, a prominent African economy, is facing a dynamic energy landscape with a growing population, rapid industrialization, and an increasing demand for electricity. The energy industry in Nigeria plays a crucial role in supporting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. To discuss key aspects of the energy transition in the country, GE Vernova organized the “Nigeria Energy Dialogue” event. This forum brought together leaders from governments, financiers, as well as stakeholders and thought leaders from utilities and the private sector to explore policy initiatives, technological advancements, and collaborations aimed at creating a sustainable energy ecosystem in Nigeria.
“We have a long-standing relationship with Nigeria and are dedicated to further strengthening it by developing localized solutions to support the country’s power infrastructure,” said Kenneth Oyakhire, Managing Director, Services – SSA, for GE Vernova’s Gas Power. “Through collaboration with the government and industry stakeholders, we aim to ensure that power generation assets contribute to a cleaner energy future while delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable power. With our history of innovation and global experience, we are committed to making Nigeria’s energy transition a reality.”
“The United States is a global leader in renewable energy,” said U.S. Mission Commercial Counselor Julie LeBlanc. “American companies, such as GE Vernova, bring significant capital, innovation, and proven solutions while upholding the highest standards of transparency, quality, and social responsibility.”
GE Vernova has been a longstanding supporter of Nigeria’s power sector. One of its recent projects includes the groundbreaking of the 1,350-megawatt Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant, fueled by Nigerian natural gas. Additionally, the company commissioned hydropower turbines for the Zungeru hydropower project and provided gas turbines for the Aba Integrated Power Project in Abia State, among others.
