Charlie Manuel had suffered a stroke and was struggling to speak, due to damage to the part of his brain that controls language expression. The condition was known as expressive aphasia and dysarthria. This came as a blow to a man who had built a career on talking and teaching hitting. He was surrounded by visitors and helpers, including a speech therapist, who made plans for Manuel to be present at a World Series game. These moments, while heartening, also served as a reminder of the former baseball manager’s condition. Now, encouraged by his friends, family, and therapist, Manuel has made progress and has renewed determination to keep going.
